Enabling Network Registry Comparison

Windows default security configuration disables networked registry comparison.  The following steps will enable networked registry comparison of a Windows 7 PC.

Requirements

  • Local administrator rights on the remote computer.
  • Both computers are members of the same domain or homegroup.
  • Pro edition of Beyond Compare 3.2 or newer for Windows.

On the remote computer

Turn on network discovery and file sharing.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Open Network and Internet.
  3. Open Network and Sharing Center.
  4. On the left side, open Change advanced sharing settings.
  5. Under Network discovery, select Turn on network discovery.
  6. Under File and printer sharing, select Turn on file and printer sharing.
  7. Click Save changes.

Enable the Remote Registry Service.

  1. On the Start menu, right click on Computer and select Manage.
  2. Go to Computer Management | Services and Applications | Services.
  3. Double click on the Remote Registry service and click Start.
  4. Change Startup type from Manual to Automatic.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Close Computer Management.

Allow connections through Windows Firewall.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Open System and Security.
  3. Open Allow a program through Windows Firewall.
  4. Click Change settings.
  5. Check Windows Remote Management with Home/Work (Private) checked.
  6. Click OK.
