Actually, I agree with digicomm on this. I have my archive handling set to "As folders once opened". I also have disabled the "Automatically scan subfolders in background" and the "Expand subfolders when loading session" options, so my archives always remain closed until I open them, but they are still being treated as folders. The right-click context menu has the following "Open With" sub-menu:
