BC shows files as read-only but they are not

I have used Beyond Compare for a while without problems. But now I noticed when I compare two files, they show up in BC as read-only so I can't propogate any changes to each other.

These two files may be read-only before but have since changed their attributes to writable. I can verify the attribute from Windows Explorer and the Read-only boxes are not checked.

If anyone can help, I will appreciate it.

    Thanks a lot,
    Zhi

This is a character encoding issue.

When Beyond Compare can't display all of the characters in a file it will open the file as read-only.

This usually happens when you're opening files that contain characters like the copyright or trademark symbol and your system is localized to a language like Chinese or Japanese.

To display the files correctly and open them as read-write, open them in the File Viewer, then select Tools|Edit Current Rules. In the General tab, select "20127 (US-ASCII)" from the Character Set drop down.

This should allow you to edit the files.
