So if a single character that should be coloured black (because it is not different) is surrounded by red (genuinely different) characters. it is coloured red (as if it were different)?

In most cases, yes, assuming a few other criteria, such as surrounded on both sides in both panes, and the type of element of each character can weight it.

Thanks. I can't imagine how anyone thought displaying non-different characters in the difference colour was a smart idea. You say that's for readability, but if I understand it correctly, in fact it totally eliminates reliable character status readability, when applied.

But what's most baffling is this weird and misleading behaviour is mentioned nowhere in the docs. Or did I miss it?

We actually had a lot of complaints about the checkerboarding behavior when it would alternate character coloring, and have had this "new" behavior for quite awhile. We've had a few ideas to help improve it further as new features like Alignment Details could benefit from character-by-character, but haven't had time to tackle those enhancements yet.

Complaints that alternating same-different characters were shown in alternating same-different colours ?

Right, alternating Red/Black/Red/Black/Red/Black/Etc which is difficult to read.

I can't imagine why anyone would want difference colouring that isn't accurate.

Please pass on my request for an option for accurate difference colouring - different characters shown in the colour for different and same characters shown in the colour for same. Thanks.
