Default BC use with Visual Studio Schema Compare

In Visual Studio 2017, in a SQL Server Database project, right-clicking the project offers a tool called Schema Compare. It's a powerful feature with a weak difference viewer. Is there a way to configure this to use Beyond Compare as the difference viewer, as the source control difference tool can? Thanks.

    Hello,

Not that I am aware of. The Schema Compare is it's own view that includes both an expandable table view and text view, and does not look like it supports an external tool. Visual Studio allows some aspects to call to external tools (diff and mergetool definitions), while other tools are entirely internal and have no preferences to set for an alternate external tool.

Thanks, Aaron, I was afraid of that. I'm resorting to copying out the two sides to text files, then comparing them with BC. That's easier than trying to interpret their inscrutable display.

You don't need to save content to text files before comparing them in Beyond Compare. BC v4.2 introduced the Clipboard Compare manager (BCClipboard.exe), which keeps track of your most recent text copies and can launch of a comparison of them in BC. It's an icon in the system tray, and you can configure it to run on startup in its options dialog (separate from BC proper) if you updated from a version prior to 4.2.

Also, if you open an empty text comparison in BC you can use the File > Open Clipboard command (Ctrl+Shift+V) to load the current clipboard into the active editor and do a full alignment. Just do Copy/Open Clipboard/Copy/Open Clipboard to compare two selections. That also works for comparing loading a text file and comparing it against a clipboard.

This one isn't directly applicable, but is also related: the BC Text Compare right click and "Edit" menus has a "Compare selection to clipboard" command that works similarly. Select a bit of text, copy it, then select a new section and use that command and BC will open a new comparison of those two blocks of text.
