Backspace adds weird character in text compare

Usually, I can edit a file in beyond compare without any problem. All of a sudden, BC now inserts a strange character when I try to backspace.



Is this the result of a bug? Or some strange key combo I accidentally pressed? Can't figure out how to reverse the effect.
