Antivirus Software and Beyond Compare Performance

A quick investigation into the impact of on-access antivirus scanning on Beyond Compare.

    Test System:
    16 GB RAM, i7 CPU, 3 TB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive, Windows 7 sp1 64-bit.

    Test Software:
    Beyond Compare 4.0.7
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 patch 5.
    McAfee Endpoint Security 10.

Antivirus software tested with all available patches and virus definitions dated 8/5/2015.

    Benchmark:
Binary background content comparison of Linux 3.3 and Linux 3.3.1 kernel source code on internal hard drive. Each side was 38,071 files, and 415 megabytes in size.

Comparison run three times using "Edit > Full Refresh", third result was recorded to obtain a comparison time with operating system cache populated.

    Results:
    No antivirus: 5.85 seconds
VSE 8.8, bcompare.exe not scanned as low risk process: 8.07 seconds
VSE 8.8, default settings: 9.16 seconds
Endpoint 10, bcompare.exe not scanned as low risk process: 10.6 seconds
Endpoint 10, default settings: 15.4 seconds

    Summary:
Based on the above results, if Folder Compare content comparison performance is not satisfactory for large comparisons, excluding bcompare.exe from on-access virus scanning is a possible solution.
