Beyond Compare stopped working on Ubuntu 14.04...

I’m not entirely sure what happened but one day BC4 was running great and the next day its like its not installed at all...
(I am running under Virtual Box)
I started to do all of the "sudo apt-get blah/blah". I suspect that made what ever the issue is worse.
Following the Install instructions here is where I am at:
    bh44962@mgeppert-VirtualBox:~/Downloads$ sudo apt-get remove bcompare
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
Package 'bcompare' is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
    bh44962@mgeppert-VirtualBox:~/Downloads$ sudo gdebi bcompare-4.0.7.19761_i386
    bcompare-4.0.7.19761_i386(1).deb bcompare-4.0.7.19761_i386.deb
    bh44962@mgeppert-VirtualBox:~/Downloads$ sudo gdebi bcompare-4.0.7.19761_i386.deb
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    Building data structures... Done
    Building data structures... Done
    This package is uninstallable
    Cannot install 'libstdc++6:i386'
    bh44962@mgeppert-VirtualBox:~/Downloads$
Looking online for help I see all kinds of things about Ubuntu not behaving nicely with 32 bit apps running on 64 bit installs with the later releases but at the same time I see that BC4 was tested with Ubuntu 14.04...

    Help!

Yes, I've verified that bcompare-4.0.7.19761_i386.deb installs and runs in a default install of Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit and 32-bit following the Linux Installation Instructions page from our website.

If you're running 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04, it should support 32-bit packages out of the box, but in case this setting was broken, you can try enabling 32-bit packages using the following command:
    sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

    Then try running:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo gdebi bcompare-4.0.7.19761_i386.deb

If "apt-get update" fixes the problem, it's possible the install failed because your local repository information was out of date.

      So I run it again:
      bh44962@mgeppert-VirtualBox:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
      bh44962@mgeppert-VirtualBox:~/Downloads$ sudo apt-get update

What happens if you just try installing the dependency with the command "sudo apt-get install libstdc++6:i386"?

            Hello,

libstdc is a very conventional, core package that many Linux systems either include out of the box or at least allow you to install.

With the error message: "Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming." would point that your distribution is either corrupted or has been modified in a very deliberate, limiting way. This would need to be fixed before you could install Beyond Compare (or, quite possibly, many other software packages).

This forum post might help remove and reset if it is a broken package:

no apt.log exists, the directory is empty.

I have un-installed the 32 bit libraries and architect and reinstalled then with the same results.

                      Hello,

                      If you run:
                      sudo apt-get update

then attempt to double click or run the .deb installer, does this help? We have tested on 14.04 64bit, and we also haven't had any other reports of issue yet. I just booted up my own test machine, and used Software Updater to make sure I had all newest updates applied; after getting the updates BC4 installed without issue using the default Software Manager or gdebi.

I have been running for quiet awhile on 14.04 64 Bit. It was just recently that something happened. I can only assume it was one of the recent updates that made it stop working.

                          Hello,

The amd64.deb is a legacy package; it is still an old 32bit version but labeled as 64bit for dependency issues. The intended package to use is the latest release of 4.0.7 with the i386.deb.

It isn't a general update that broken 14.04. As I mentioned, on my own test machine I have grabbed all updates using the Software Updater application. It is more likely that another application or system configuration change has been applied to your specific system that somehow has removed libstdc. If you try to use apt-get install libstdc++:i386, you hit an error log of required dependencies that cannot be resolved. If you then step through and try to install each of these using apt-get install, are you will likely hit more errors that they require other specific dependencies. Normally, these are resolved automatically, but if you step down (attempt to install each dependency error manually) are you able to get to a bottom level and get it installed?

I bit the bullet and did a fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04...
After 3 days of installing stuff and getting my system back, Beyond Compare IS running like a champ.
                            Consider it closed
                            Thanks for all your help...

And, if you feel like beta testing: BC4.1's beta just released and has a 64bit client.

Please note that we don't recommend using the beta with important or live data unless you already have a backup. We do appreciate any testing you would be able to do with the beta.
