  • Limiting the number of characters in a row being compared during a text compare

I often have data files to compare that are about 1400 characters per line (fixed width delimited). Is there a way during a text compare to limit BC4 to only compare say the first 15 characters between the two files, for all of the records. Basically ignoring everything after 'n' characters?

    Hello,

In the Text Compare, you can define a Columns grammar or Delimited grammar to match on that section of the line, and then mark that grammar as Important, and Everything Else as Unimportant. We have a KB article and walkthrough video available here:

Alternatively, you can also define the grammar to match on the unimportant section and then mark the grammar as Unimportant and Everything Else remains Important, depending on how you want to approach the definition of the grammar. This way may work better if you need to update session defaults and leave everything else important for other comparisons.
