Suggestion: Don't suppress "Actions > File Compare Report" when both folders and file are selected

Aaron has explained that "Actions > File Compare Report" will not be offered when a folder is selected.

I believe this unnecessarily degrades the useability of the product. "File Compare Report" only needs files to work with, and the presence of any folders in a selection list also containing files should be considered an artifact of the user's selection process, not an inhibitor of the "File Compare Report" function.

Scenario 1: A user has displayed a folder tree, and opened the several contiguous folders containing the files desired in the "File Compare Report". The user selects the first file and then shift clicks to select the last file. This also selects the intervening folders (containing desired files), which unnecessarily disables the "File Compare Report" action.

Scenario 2: The user has displayed the folder tree, without opening folders to show files, and selected several (possibly non-contiguous) folders.

If the user then ask for "move", "copy", "touch", or "delete", or almost anything else, the operation would include the files inside the unopened folders. "File Compare Report" is also a reasonable operation the user might request, based on the user's knowledge of the (undisplayed) files in the selected folders, and should be offered.

In this scenario, there is no easy way to adjust the selection list to contain the files in the folders without the folders. A natural and often used method of selection is not available to select files for "File Compare Report".

Scenario 3: A user has displayed a folder tree, and opened the several non-contiguous folders containing the files desired in the "File Compare Report". Several groups of non-contiguous files must now be selected for "File Compare Report".

All the files in one of the groups can be selected by shift clicking. All files in the remaining groups must be individually selected by control clicking to add to the list. This can be an onerous burden, which would go much faster if the folders containing the files could be added to the list by control clicking.

But, clicking on a folder will disable "File Compare Report". Thus the user is forced to complete the selection by control clicking every file remaining outside the initial selection range, avoiding all intermediary folders.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll add your notes to our wishlist entry on this subject. Currently, the Actions menu is the right-click menu based on selection. As you've found, invalid items cause some items in the menu to disable to be removed, but enhancing our File Report command to better interact with a variety of selections is something we'd like to tackle.
