  • Windows Script Host Excel.Application

I have seen a bunch of posts about similar problems, but nothing to address the scenario I have.

This happens in both BC3 and BC4. I will be upgrading, but was disappointed that this still exists in four.

I was hoping there was a way to address the issue.

When I start BC, during the initial Workspace load, the comparison hits an Excel file. At that point I get the error:

    Title Bar: Window Script Host
    Script: D:\StandAlone\Beyond Compare4\XLS_to_TAB_Single.vbs
    Line: 19
    Char 1
Error: ActiveX component can't create object: 'Excel.Application'
    Code: 800A01AD
    Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error.

Now, I understand what is going on, but want to turn it off.

I do not have Microsoft Office installed on most of my systems. Nor, would I want any interpretation on those that I do.

I want nothing but the standard compares shown in the 'Compare Contents' window.

How do I turn off this aggravating error window, which is not an error?

    Thank you for you insight.

    Hi Jim,

If you open the File Formats dialog from the Tools menu, you'll see the list of file types we support. Find the MS Excel on and uncheck the checkbox next to it and BC will revert to doing a plain binary comparison of any Excel files.

We are working on fixing that, and 4.1 won't require Excel to open .xls/.xlsx files anymore.

Thank you, that did the trick. I figured I was missing something basic.
