  • Compare Contents of RAR files much slower with BC4

The binary comparison of RAR file contents using "Compare Contents > Binary Comparison" takes more than 75% longer using BC4 as opposed to BC3.

The comparison of non-compressed folders is still the same, it is only when comparing contents of RAR files.

Why this difference between BC3 and BC4 ?

    Hello,

BC4 upgraded to WinRAR5 support. Unfortunately, the new provided unrar.dll to have this support isn't as thread safe as the previous versions, making it slower. If Rarlab is able to patch this, we'd be able to use multiple threads to help with the unrar process while still using the newest version of their library.

      Thanks for the information.

I use this function regularly for large RAR files so the extra time taken is quite significant and means an update to BC4 at this time is not practical.

Are Rarlabs aware of this problem and are you working with them to provide a solution ?

        Hello,

We'll follow-up with RarLabs and shoot them a quick email. The provided .dll is throwing exceptions, so they should be aware of how that is passing back errors compared to their previous version.

              Thanks, that's good news.

Have you any idea when this will be released as a final release version ?

Not yet. We only just began beta testing, so we'll have to see what issues pop up and what it takes to fix them before we'd know when we can leave the beta phase.
