  • It appears that BC4 cannot connect to some ftp sites

    Hi all

I stumbled a few ftp servers that I cannot manage to connect to via BC4.

I can connect to the server with FileZilla, but not with BC4. (CuteFTP doesn't work either)

See screenshot for the settings placed in Filezilla: (for obvious reasons, I didn't use the actual credentials)

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

    Hello Thomas,

The first thing I notice is you have the encryption set in the screenshot. This means you are actually running FTPS, not FTP, which requires BC4 Pro. If you have Pro, in the Tools menu -> Profiles dialog, please be sure to select FTPS as your protocol type. How does this work for you?

If you have Std edition, please follow these steps to test/try this feature:

      Hi Aaron

      Thanks for the quick feedback.

I've just installed BC4 and I'm trialling the new features.

Ok, I've attempted to save a new profile with my settings.
(PS, in filezilla I can have the Port value blank, but not in BC4 - it automatically turns the blank into a value; what do I do in this regards?)

Now that I have the profile (hopefully) set up correctly, how do I use it? Click image for larger version

FTPS defaults to port 21 (explicit encryption) or port 990 (implicit encryption).

Once you've defined the profile, open a Folder Compare, then use the browse button for the left or right folder. Select the profile you just defined in the browse dialog.

I've tried both 21 and 990 combinations, and I get this Click image for larger version

Name:	loading_folder_error.jpg
Views:	1
Size:	16.7 KB
ID:	76289error.

This is what I get in the log:
          Port 21
19/10/2014 1:01:11 PM Unable to load ftps:// Connection Closed Gracefully.

          Port 990
19/10/2014 12:55:12 PM Unable to load ftps:// A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

          Any other suggestions?

Have you had any other reported ftps server that BC couldn't connect to?

Do you know the expected port, and if your server is defined to be an Implicit or Explicit FTPS server? The port is undefined in your earlier Filezilla screenshot, but what port does it eventually connect to in the Filezilla connection log?

Filezilla might have extra error handling or is better able to alter settings on the fly to connect to a server. BC3/4 and Cute would need the client settings to be setup correct prior to connection.

My previous filezilla screenshot has "Requires Explicit FTP over TLS"?

Filezilla appears to default it to 21 if the port value is blank. Hopefully the below will offer some clues (the italics are values I didn't want to disclose for obvious reasons)

Thanks. Could you email us at with a copy of your and a copy of the FTP connection log, and a link back to this forum thread?

You can generate a from the Help menu -> Support; Export.

I noticed that on the Export window, it says 'passwords will not be included'. But considering that you won't have the password, how will you be able to reproduce?

Sorry I just need a few more details before I send you sensitive server information. Cheers!

                  • #10
I wasn't looking to reproduce; I was going to review your settings to make sure we were on the same page across the board. If you could also include the current (failing) BC4 connection log, that would be great.

Being able to connect with passwords would certainly help, if including them was an option. If you have the ability to create and test with test accounts, we could use those.

Unfortunately, I cannot share exact server details. If sending you an BC export or server details is the only possible way to assist me than this thread can be considered closed. Sorry about that!

Am I the only one that reported a ftp server that BC4 cannot connect to? If I am, than maybe I'm actually doing something wrong or the server itself has certain rare\unqiue settings that aren't supported.

                      • #12
The BC export wouldn't include passwords by default, it would just include the other configuration information to make sure everything is configured correctly. Comparing the BC log and Filezilla log would also be useful.

This isn't a general BC4 error, but troubleshooting an FTP connection is tricky due to the large variety and configuration of various FTP servers. Directly connecting is very useful, but we can also continue to troubleshoot remotely with your help if you are interested.
