  • Deploying new File Format to users from central location

    Hello all

Quick question, is there an easy to deploy a new File Format to multiple users within an AD environment where users are not admins of their machine?

I have scratched my head a little but have not come up with a solution.

    Any input would be appreciated.

For a default install of BC3, user settings should be installed to their %AppData% directories, which they have access to Import a File Format using the Tools menu -> Import wizard. The files stored here are also plain .xml. If the program is not running, you can manually parse/edit the BCFileFormats.xml to add in an additional format. Or if the users are all using the same base set of Formats with no personal customization, you could replace the entire file with an updated version.

Do any of these strategies work for you?

Importing using the wizard brings up a request for elevated permission so that rules out that deployment method.

Replacing the BCFileFormats.xml file could work, depends as you have pointed out if people have made any changes which could cause its own set of problems.

        Hello,

Are you importing a format that also uses an external conversion? For BC3, these would be stored in the install directory/Helpers/ subdirectory and would be the cause for the elevated permissions.

BC4 (currently in beta) is actually moving this location out of the install directory, and into the AppData area.
