Path conversion feature

Hello all,
I usually have a lot of information in folders, but when I work with customers I usually have in their folders, windows shortcuts to the folders to the locations where the real information is, which are usually in the same disk drive.

c:\data\product1
c:\data\product2
c:\data\product3
c:\data\customer1
+ -- Shortcut to product1
+ -- Shortcut to product3
etc…

But when I synchronize to my USB flash drive, the paths in the shortcuts are ABSOLUTE, so the are NOT valid when I copy them to the other pane.

It would be a wonderful feature to be able to convert these paths and to compare them, to ensure that despite the root directory of each panel, both paths contained have the SAME target location (with relative path convention).

I consider BC part of me. We are all using it and making it one of the greatest utilities ever made.

Thank you for the suggestion. There isn't a way to follow the shortcuts in the current version of Beyond Compare, but we'll consider adding this to a future release.

Thank you for the suggestion... But what will happen when I COPY or MOVE a shortcut? It's a rule of the game to do it in the PROPER location, IMHO.

If you copy or move a shortcut .lnk file, it will behave the same as if you copy or move it using Explorer. The shortcut should still work.

I am sorry. I have not explained what I am thinking in a good way.
Left pane: Base folder path: c:\data\
Right pane: Base folder path: e:\dvd1\backup\data

When I create any shorcut in c: and copy it to e:, references are targeting to c: from e:, but I would like to have a shortcut in e: to target to a folder in e: also.

In other words, to CONVERT the path relatively to the base folders chosen.

I think I understand what you're asking.

Given:

c:\folderA
c:\shortcuttofoldera.lnk - points to c:\folderA

If you sync the folder and shortcut to d:\

d:\shortcuttofoldera.lnk will point to c:\folderA after the copy or sync.

Are you saying that you would like copying the .lnk file to d:\shortcuttofoldera.lnk to change the shortcut so it points to d:\folderA?

As I said previously, that is the request. Even better with the "great long path management" that BC has.

So this is consistent with

Thank you for the clarification. Detecting that shortcut paths are pointing to files or folders included in the copy, then converting the path relative to the base folders will be tricky, so it isn't likely that we'll add this feature. Thank you for the suggestion.

Unfortunately, this feature request is a bit outside the scope of Beyond Compare. It is something we can keep in mind, but it would not be something we could implement any time soon. We do appreciated the feedback, but you'll need to update your shortcuts manually or find another product that can perform that update if you need this type of functionality.
