I have a zip file of size about 500 MB. The files uncompressed are a little above 1 GB. When I try to update the zip file, the process begins and then seems to hang (I get no feedback or response) and I have to kill the Beyond Compare program.
Is this a limitation in Beyond Compare or is there something I should be doing?

Hello Rich,
Which version of BC2 are you currently using? Is it the latest BC2.5.3?
All BC2.x updates are free for 2.x users. You can update to the latest here:
http://www.scootersoftware.com/download.php?zz=dl2_en
We have a KB article listing the max tested values for BC2 here:
http://www.scootersoftware.com/support.php?zz=kb_maxfilev2
This is also dependent on your computer. How much available ram do you have when you attempt the operation?
You can also install the trial of BC3 without removing or altering BC2. This way you can test out BC3 while still using BC2 for day to day work:

You may be eligible for a BC3 discount or free upgrade to Std edition. See this article:

Aaron,
I have version 2.5.3 and I've check the max values in your KB article. My zip file falls within these limits.
I have a little over 1.1 GB of physical memory available

Rich,
Do you have your anti-virus software set to scan inside zip files? If so, it might help to turn that feature off, or temporarily disable real-time virus scanning to see if it might be affecting the behavior.

I temporarily disabled anti-virus software and the problem still occurs.

In Task Manager, in the Processes tab, use the View menu -> Columns, and enable the I/O Reads and I/O Writes columns. Do these continue to change during the unzip/processing?
If you leave it running for sufficiently long (overnight), does the process complete successfully?
If you install the trial of BC3, does it also run similarly? The abort button in BC3 animates, which may help indicate processing as well.

The I/O Reads and I/O Writes columns have their values constantly increasing.
If I replace a single file in the zip file, it takes a few minutes

Is the zip file on a remote machine? If so, updates will be slow. I have not had an issue updating zip files that exist on the local machine (same machine that BC is running on).

No, the zip file is not on a remote machine
