View Full Version : If I Use Copy will it be a COMPARED Copy?

12-Feb-2004, 03:23 PM
Hi Im intrested in purchasing this software but I have a Couple Questions.
1) When Using Copy,Move,Synchronize..Will that NEW copy be CRC Checked or Binary Compared?..It Doesnt seem to since there is no = sign after the move..is there a setting?
2)I've read that a Binary Comparison is more accurate than the CRC Check (if my memmory serves me right..maybe need to check that to;) if thats the case what to do with Archived files? (crc or binary) and i SHOULD NOT treat them as folders correct? (zip;rar;ace)

Thank You thats all for now

Hi Rick,

BC2's default settings only check the size and timestamp of files, but it is possible to perform a full binary comparison too. Go into the Session menu, select Comparison Control, and switch Compare Contents from Size Only to Binary.

That turns on background content comparisons. It will check the contents when the comparison first loads, but does handle the comparison after the copy automatically too. If you want more control you'll need to explicitly use the Compare Contents Action.

Adding a "Verify after Copy" option that would only check after a copy is on the wishlist, but we don't support it right now.

Binary comparisons are more thorough than CRC checks, but how thorough they need to be really depends on what you're using it for. Binary comparisons check the files byte-by-byte, so, as long as the disk and OS are reporting the correct values, it will detect the difference. CRCs check a hash of each file, so it could miss differences, but the chances of that happening accidentally are pretty slim.

Thanx for the quick response...
If I use the Sessions Options for this does that mean every time I restart I need to go into sessions and check the boxs again ..Is there a permant Option Check Box ?

There's another item in the Session menu that you can use for this: Set Defaults.... That takes the current settings (excluding base folders), and uses them whenever you start a new folder comparison.

And yes, making that more obvious is on the todo list too. ;)

Ok All is working well so far .. but it seems i cant find a setting or am doin something wrong on moving/copying folders. I pick the folder on left and then pick the folder I want this NEW folder in(on the right) and it only seems to copy the file(from left folder) and not leave it in its folder when it gets to the right (just the file)...What to do?

BC always copies files straight across the display. If you want to copy it's parent folder too, select the parent of the folder you're copying from, instead of the folder itself. Once it's open in BC, just double click on the folder to open it, and select the files inside.

Ok its been a while... And I purchased your great Program. I am Using the Current Version and i am Wondering If you ever Included that option? I do not get an = sign after I copy a program I have to manually select then compare. The File is a .zip and its straight across (not selecting the folder to copy just the file).

Thanx
Derrick

Hello Derrick,

Verify after copy still hasn't made it into the current release of Beyond Compare (version 2.4.3). We are still considering it for a future release of BC.

SO then there isnt a radio button... but is there a way to set it up to do just that?

Right now the only way to compare after copying is to manually force a comparison.
