Unable to compare - stream read error?

I just copied all the files on my 1 TB drive to a new backup drive (same capacity) with BC 3.1.9 (build 11282) which took quite some time. Both drives are USB2, and my system is XP Pro. I don't recall copying a drive ever taking so long but then again I don't think I've ever copied close to 1 TB all at once before.

Now I am using BC to binary compare all the files to verify, and so far (currently on 105126 of 614318 files) BC says it can't compare 5 of them due to a stream read error.

Does anyone know what this might mean? Are there file errors on one or both drives? Is it just a hiccup? Is a virus or antivirus (running Microsoft Security Essentials) interfering?

Any help would be appreciated because I need to make sure the backup works 100%.

Hello,

If you try to binary compare one of those files individually, do you still encounter the stream read error? It is possible it is just a hiccup with such a large transfer.

Also, all BC3.x updates are free for 3.x users. Please update to the latest release (3.1.11) from the Help menu -> Check for Updates or from our website.

Just to add a bit of information that may be helpful, I recently copied just over 1 TB of files from my Buffalo 1.5 TB Linkstation to a Western Digital "Green" 2.0 TB drive - both connected by USB on XP Pro - and it took precisely 49 hours. Non-stop, flat out! :)

But... no errors!

I think it took that long because as well as doing the copy it was also doing a binary compare, so I think each file was being read and then written, and then each was being read again and compared with what was written.

Although I've never seen the 'Stream read error', I do have another problem which I am about to start a new thread on.

One other thing we always recommend as a first step troubleshooting step is to cut your comparison into smaller parts. This way we can determine if the overall size is a factor, if it is a specific folder or file (and by cutting into smaller and smaller parts that exhibit the problem, track down which it is).
