This is driving me NUTZ.

I have a few files in my project that I am trying to manually merge, by using the file diff window and then the side by side difference display.

Here is a file that is causing me grief today:

http://i49.tinypic.com/16c1e1j.png

Note the files that the cursor is over - "vserverclientmgt.cpp" on each side.

If I double click that file and open the difference window, the right click context menu does not provide the "Copy to other side" command. It is grayed out. Same for the right arrow button in the tool bar. BC is not giving me a way to move changes from the file on the left to the file on the right. It is treating the right hand side as read only. (It's not. I checked. And I can open the same file in Notepad, change it, and save it. And that does not affect BC's behavior in this regard, the problem persists.)

And once I leave the file difference window and go back to this directory display, the red "inequality" glyph in the center column is gone. Applying the =? tool button to this file to force a comparison of the file once again will cause the glyph to re-appear. I have never seen the equal/not equal indicator not be "stable" before like this.

As you can see, most files are not affected by this problem. Just a few. The ones I NEED to correct. I've never, ever had this happen.

I am running Windows 7/64 bit, BC 2.5.3., and BC is registered.

This is really the first significant bug I've found in BC in the four+ years that I have used it.

From your text compare, open your Session settings \ Specs tab.
If the Disable editing checkboxes are checked, try unchecking them.

Hello,

BC2 and BC3 have a few methods of "protecting" files, and it is not limited to the Read-Only dos attribute. In BC2, if you go to the Session menu -> Session Manager, if the Left or Right base folder is marked as Read-only; that would prevent it (for all files).

Also, under the Tools menu -> Options, Rules, select the rule used for *.cpp; check the Conversion tab to see if it is applying an external conversion or if it marked as Read-only.

If you copy your pair of files to another location using My Computer / Windows Explorer (such as your Desktop), does the issue persist?

If you are still having trouble, would you be able to email us your Support.zip (from the Help menu -> Support; Export) to support@scootersoftware.com
Please include a link back to this forum post. If the issue reproduces with your files on your desktop, a pair of files would also be helpful.
