Is it possible to rename a ftp profile?

I want to use a more descriptive name.

So e.g.:
"ftps://FirstnameLastname@justanothername.endoftheinternet .org"
should be renamed to:
"me@mysite"

Is this possible?

I create an FTP file compare session with the FTP site in the right pane. You can leave the left pane blank if you like. Then save the session with any name you like. That way you can open the "me@mysite" session from the home screen without every having to remember what the real name of the ftp site is.

This is the way to save a session. But I wanted to create a FTP Profile, so I can call that one on any new session or anywhere else.

It's almost the same, but the profile way is a bit more sophisticated.

The current behavior uses the name/address/port combination to uniquely identify and FTP Profiles, and there is not a way to rename them.

You can save a Session with only one side loaded (an FTP in this case) and name that session, as Michael suggests.

I like to use the profile as well for external calls from let's say Tortoise or the explorer, so I don't have to remember the password.
And what if I want to compare 2 ftp sites?

In a BC3 folder session, click on the ... button (or the associated ▼ droplist) next to the pathname dropdown. Note that you can browse either the "File System" or "FTP Site". Since you can choose your FTP profiles from here...there is no need to remember the entire long ftp URL and type it in. It's as simple as selecting it from the list. Since you can do this from both sides, comparing FTP to FTP is still a breeze.

Thanks again, Michael. This is exactly what I had in mind with my question. When I use the ▼ droplist, I like to pick a profile. But then there are all non-descriptive ip-addresses in the profile name. It would be much easier if I could rename those.

Else my list looks like:
Username@192.168.1.150
Username@192.168.1.151
Username@192.168.1.152
Username@192.168.1.153
etc.

and I like:
me@office
me@living
other_me@office
etc.

So, in effect, you are requesting an alias to appear in the FTP profile droplist. I doubt that Scooter will ever choose to rename the FTP profiles themselves, but letting a user add a custom alias to each profile sounds like a reasonable request to go on the wishlist for a future enhancement.

Thanks for the suggestion Kurdy. I've appended it to a list of FTP features to consider (with initial suggestions started by Michael, which I think is an interesting coincidence).

How many FTP Profiles would you say you have? Do most share a similar login, or different logins for the same/similar ips?

OK, call it an alias. I thought of it as the name of a logon data set :-)

I have around 10 logons now, some same names different domain, some different name same domain.
Mostly its the IP address that bothers me.

Have you already tried to use the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file in order to use more speaking names?

But I carry BC3 on a USB stick, from workspace to workspace.
For that I wait for the next version :-)

The next version will probably not contain this feature. We have quite a few other scheduled tasks, and the current FTP Profile system will probably stay as is for the forseeable future.

But I have documented the idea of an 'alias' in our tracking software. When we revisit this area we'll look through and see if it is something we can work in.
