VSS but no SC menu in BC

For BC to interface with our VSS does this require the "ProviderRegKey" (HKLM\Software\SourceCodeControlProvider) to be a valid choice?
I prefer to blank this one out (to disable VStudio integration) as it slows VStudio right down for larger projects.

I do have the "Microsoft Visual SourceSafe" and \Software\Microsoft\SourceSafe" value/data combo in subkey "InstalledSCCProviders". And this one did appear as I went through the motions of setting up the SCC option in BC. It even navigated the dBase and I selected the associated project and all, but still no menu option to check in/out/diff in the project viewer :-(

And to answer my own question: you *can* blank out the [HKLM\SOFTWARE\SourceCodeControlProvider]ProviderRegKey value to disable VStudio integration and still have BC interface with the CVS dBase.
