I just purchased this fantastic program a few weeks ago and have found it very useful for comparing downloads, photos and configuration files. It's great that you can expand java archives such as .ear, .war. and .jar files. I use this feature quite a bit with my role as a WebLogic Admin. The built-in ftp client is also a great plus.

I have a few feature requests/suggestions

1. Ability to right click on a file or directory and select an INCLUDE filter. Now I just click EXCLUDE and cut and paste to the INCLUDE box. This would save a lazy person like me a few clicks.

2.Ability to hide/collapse one of the side-by-side navigation windows. BC is great just for exploring files systems even when I'm not comparing something or maybe I would just like to have a better view of one of the sides without scrolling left and right.

3. Ability to give name/description to the base folder in addition to the physical location. i.e. C:\dev\projects could have a name\alias of "Development" similar to how you store session names. So each alias would be tied to a physical location.

4. Under the ftp features, the ability to disable certain ftp commands or a "view only mode". Let's say I want to login as root via the ftp client, but I want to prevent the accidental possibility of removing or changing files. I understand there are confirmations, but it would be an extra
level of safety for systems where I only want to view and not edit but I need root permission to view all files. It would be even better if I could set this flag for each session.

5. (WISH LIST) Ability to compare more than two locations at one time. I invision the left-most folder being the master and being able to say compare 3 other locations against the left-most folder.

Keep up the great work,

Rob

Hi Robert,

Thank you for the suggestions.

(1) Adding an explicit "Include" command is on the wishlist.
(2) You're referring to the directory viewer? It doesn't support left/right scrolling, so that's not clear. Having an option for just a single-sided display is something we're considering.
(3) Would this just be a list of alias=path groupings that you could use in the path edits? We are going to add support for environmental variables in BC3, so that might server the same purpose.
(4) You can flag each side of the comparison as read-only in the Session Manager dialog. There's a checkbox below each of the path edits.
(5) We're looking into supporting an n-way comparison, but I can't say what it will be like yet.

(2) Single-sided display in the folder viewer is ONE good idea and should come along with a next version (also have a look at my post folder-viewer GUI (http://www.scootersoftware.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=general&Number=4856&Searchpage=1&Main=4856&Words=+Lutz&topic=&Search=true#Post4856)).
An additional suggestion:
Resizing a colum should not affect any other colum as in windows explorer. If the width exceeds the folder viewer side we need a horizontal scroolbar.

Lutz,

Thank you again for the suggestions.

The column resize behavior will likely change in version 3 of Beyond Compare.
